Gold Award Project Book Drive
Hi my name is Julia McCoy, and I am an Ambassador Girl Scout in troop 2409. I wanted to inform all of the Leaders in the Sunset Vista neighborhood about my Gold Award Project. Just recently I went to the board and got approved my idea of reading to children with autism. These children are in high school but are at such a low level that they are still trying to spell out small words, and cannot read very well. My plan is to read to these children so they can build reading, listening, and imagination skills for their future. I am also starting a book club for these kids to be able to create lasting relationships with other autistic kids, and peers my age around their high school. I hope to have this club stay with the high school by continuing every year with some of the same students, and new arriving students. To move forward with this reading club, and to teach each student to read will be a difficult challenge due to lack of books in their high school that are what we would call picture books or kiddie books. I decided a book drive would be a great project to gain access to the books they will need.
I'm asking each Leader to explain to their troop my project, and ask if each girl could donate at least 1 book each (more books would be appreciated). If this could happen I would have a wide variety for the kids to choose something they are interested in hearing. I would be very thankful if everyone was willing to participate!
Please contact me if your troop would like to help with my book drive towards my Gold Award Project. My contact information is (480) 760-3858 or email me at

Thank you for your time. I am extremely excited to get a move on my Gold Award Project and prepare autistic kids for their future after high school.
Thank you,

Gilbert Art Walk
The Gilbert Art Walk Steering Committee is looking for local Girl Scout troops to help out at the Gilbert Art Walk on the 4th Friday of each month, now through May. The art walk is held in downtown Gilbert, under the water tower, and runs from 6-10pm. We are looking for helpers to pass out flyers for the charity-of-the-month raffles and to assist the committee as needed. It would be a 4:30-10:30 commitment - but we would welcome any amount of time if that is too long!
If you would like more information on the art walk – you can check out the website http://www.gilbertartwalk.com/ .

Music for Seniors
I am looking for troops that would like to provide an hour of musical entertainment for Emeritus, a local senior center. Our troop goes a few times a year to visit and at our most recent visit they mentioned that they lost funding to pay for musical entertainment. The residents there LOVE to have kids there especially playing instruments for them. They are very welcoming and always supportive.
If your troop would be willing to visit on a Saturday late afternoon/evening one or two times please let me know and I can give you more information. My goal is to set up one to two troops a month for the next few months to visit for an hour. They may not need people in December due to the holidays and it being the only time people really visit.
The total commitment is the time it takes to get your troop together to see what instruments are played and the hour you are there plus travel time so it's a very small commitment. If other girls in the troop want to come that don't play instruments they can come along to pass out refreshments and visit.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Thanks,
Susan Manning
